Semana Santa

High in the mountains of Mexico is a city of courtyards, cobblestones, and secrets waiting to be revealed. A city where one visit can change your life. San Miguel can seem almost unbearably beautiful. The churches whose roof tiles curl like the wings of fallen angels, the houses whose colors are pulled from the Earth’s core-lava reds and sulfurous ochres. -Peter Fish/ Sunset Magazine

The processions in these photos were taken during Semana Santa-Holy Week/Easter and called are El Santo Encuentro and El Santo Entierro. Imagine hundreds of little children in white dressed as angels with soft white wings made of feathers. Don Genero Almanza is San Miguel's santero [saint maker] who sculpted dozens of breathtaking angels that are carried on platforms strewn with flowers. Women dressed in black carry them on their shoulders for miles through the cobblestone streets. Flanking the procession are 500 men and women carrying faroles [lamps with candles]. Then 36 men carry the statue of Christ carved by Santero Salvado Vargas Sandoval-it weighs one ton. The children's choir and an orchestra sing special music written over 100 years ago. Due to a recent change of plans Manto de Luna is available for rental during Holy Week and it is one of the most special times of year to experience our magical town.
